HAYES/HAYS ANCESTORS
NEW INFO FOR ARCH HAYES:
SHAVING CREAM METHOD TO BE ABLE TO READ YOUR CEMETERY STONES
***
born abt 1806, Pa.
married (Barbary ?) born Switzerland
It's sort of convoluted story. My mother had polio about 1910 which left her with a twisted spine. In 1916, her by-then single mother brought her, from Onaga, KS, to a renowned orthopedist in Los Angeles. Grandmother Effa needed to find "affordable housing" and a job, thus going to work as live-in housekeeper for Mr. Hayes. I believe it was more his idea that he shouldn't have this much younger female (Effa) living in his house unless they were married---so they were. They lived in Santa Ana, Orange, CA and that's where they were for the 1920 census.
I asked for that info to be put in his bio as it would explain to future researchers who the players were.
It makes sense that he was buried in Onaga with his first wife -- a common occurance then. Why he came to Calif. in the first place is unknown to me. I do know that his daughter, Daisy, and her husband Ross Grover lived there eventually and I knew them well. Uncle Ross always cut my hair when we lived there! Aunt Daisy was the same age and a very good friend of Effa.
After Arch's death, Effa went back to Kansas and in 1925 married a childhood sweetheart, Charles Irish. He was a R.R. engineer and they lived in Kansas City, MO. He was killed in a streetcar accident and Effa eventually took turns visitiing the homes of her three daughters in California. Then she lived full time with one when the husband died in 1935 and left an 11 y.o. child. In her last years she lived with her own sister (caretaker) and died on Dec. 17, 1957 in Santa Ana. She is entombed at Fairhaven Memorila Park there.
This may be more than you wanted to know, but it answers your specific question and gives you a picture into which to fit Arch. I hope I've been helpful.
